Sheung Wan Civic Centre|The Price by Arthur Miller (A Stage-Reading Performance)
Description
【Giant Series】
Drama is inseparable from its historical and cultural context. The <【Giant Series】a>aims to trace the footsteps of masters in the history of drama, focusing on one classic dramatist each time, exploring their cultural context and creative characteristics, and hoping to stand on the shoulders of these giants of drama, absorb their essence, and look towards a brighter future.
The first in the series is American master dramatist Arthur Miller, some of whose representative works such as <『Death of a Salesman』, <『The Crucible』> (also translated as <『The Melting Pot』>), and <『All My Sons』> have been performed locally. Miller is one of the most frequently performed playwrights in the world. The focused play of this event, <『The Price』>, premiered in 1968, winning the Best Screenplay Award from the Outer Critics Circle and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. It has since been performed multiple times, including at the Royal Theatre in Bath, UK, in 2018, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the play's premiere, and was then performed in London's West End due to popular demand.
Staging of the Play
Victor dropped out of school during the Great Recession in the US to take care of his elderly father. Thirty years later, he returns to his old home intending to sell his father's dilapidated mansion. His wife, brother, and a cunning furniture dealer each have their own agenda. Victor has to settle not only the value of the old and obscure furniture but also his long-standing grievances and family relationships. Was his sacrifice back then worth anything at all?
This play has been performed multiple times, and the actors have been nominated for major awards because the characters Miller created are intricate and complex, giving the actors ample room for interpretation. Following <『The Devil's Pen』>, Hong Kong Drama Best Actor Award winner, Man Kit-Lui, is once again invited to join veteran actors, Siu-yin Lau, Su Yu-hui, and Zhang Peide, to perform in the Hong Kong premiere of this Miller masterpiece. Even in a staged reading format, the performance will undoubtedly spark dazzling chemistry.
